Saltersford Tunnel west of Barnton, Cheshire
This is the Trent and Mersey Canal approaching the east portal of Saltersford Tunnel. The tunnel is 424 yards (388 metres) in length, and is narrow, so boats cannot pass each other in it. Additionally, the tunnel is crooked, the other end only being briefly visible initially, so great care has to be taken to make sure a boat has not already entered from the other end. There is no towpath in the tunnel; horses had to be unhitched and walked over the hill.
