Approaching Saltersford Tunnel near Barnton, Cheshire
This is the Trent and Mersey Canal approaching the east portal of Saltersford Tunnel. The tunnel is 424 yards (388 metres) in length, and is narrow, so boats cannot pass each other in it. Additionally, the tunnel is crooked, the other end only being briefly visible initially, so great care has to be taken to make sure a boat has not already entered from the other end.

Moorings east of Barnton, Cheshire
The Trent and Mersey Canal consists of a wide basin here between the Barnton and Saltersford tunnels. With passage only being possible in one direction at a time there was always the need for a sizeable waiting area

Saltersford Tunnel east portal, Cheshire
The tunnel is east of Barnton and is one of three tunnels on the canal between Anderton and Preston Brook Saltersford Tunnel is 424 yards (388 metres) in length, and is narrow, so boats cannot pass each other in it. Additionally, the tunnel is crooked, the other end only being briefly visible initially, so great care has to be taken to make sure a boat has not already entered from the other end. There is no towpath in the tunnel; horses had to be unhitched and walked over the hill. The number 203 is attached to the portal as the whole underground structure was considered to be "bridge" No 203.
