Although the line was built in 1842, Goostrey station was not opened until 1891. This was the first part of the West Coast main line system to be electrified in 1959. Today the line is used by a variety of passenger services including local trains between Crewe and Manchester provided by Northern that call at Goostrey. There are also frequent freight trains heading to and from the Manchester area which are generally routed this way rather than through Macclesfield.
