Shops on London Road, Holmes Chapel
The centre of Holmes Chapel (or Church Hulme as it was then called) suffered a great fire in 1753 that destroyed many buildings including those on this site. They were rebuilt later in the century; the building that now houses Gascoigne Halman, Estate Agents bears the date 1798 and the initials TBH (Thomas Bayley Hall of the Hermitage, who paid for most of the rebuilding).

Shops in Holmes Chapel
The weather hasn't improved much in twelve years and the butcher's shop has remained substantially the same. The estate agent's has changed its name, however. Compare with Image

Morreys of Holmes Chapel
A long-established, family-run business, Morreys sits squarely at the centre of the village by one of a pair of mini-roundabouts. The latter provide many hours of amusement to the locals when the M6 is blocked and HGVs try to escape via Holmes Chapel. Morreys range of hardware, bikes, pet goods and garden items is outstanding: if they haven't got it, you probably don't need it!

Although barely past 3pm, the dismal weather has made it almost dark already. These two shops - an estate agent and a traditional butcher - stand opposite the church.
