Bare trees and brown Bracken
Autumn will probably come early to Congleton Edge owing to its exposure to the west winds blowing straight across the flat-lands of the Cheshire Plain, the Bracken has withered and died back and the Birches have lost all their leaves.

Its hay-days are long over
It is a bit of a surprise to turn a corner on a ridge path and come across one of these, it is surrounded by semi-mature trees on three sides and a wall on the other so it must have been here a long time. The machine is a Lister Blackstone combined swathe-turner and hay-rake. Originally produced by Blackstone as a horse-drawn implement under the name of Massey-Harris Blackstone, the design was slightly altered to make it towable by tractors as these became more fashionable. Blackstone's were bought out by R A Lister & Co in 1936, but because of an existing agreement with Massey-Harris the machines could not be stamped with the new company logo until after 1944. Therefore because the hub-case of the large wheel is marked Lister Blackstone we can assume this machine was produced later than then, but without further evidence it is impossible to date it any closer.

Through the Bilberries
The Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) bushes grow in huge numbers on Congleton Edge, normally they will only grow to about 2 feet (60 cm) in height but these were at least 4 feet high. In early Summer they will have pale-green flowers tinged with pink, the edible fruit are round and blue-black and when fully ripe are quite sweet.
