The Castle Inn, Congleton
Beautiful, if unseasonal, weather for March, lunchtime at this pretty country pub with a pleasant garden, good beer and food available - and my wife and I were the only customers!

The Castle Inn
Castle is a common name for a pub but normally it refers to a nearby fortification, in this case there seems to be no record of Congleton ever having one. This makes me wonder if, perhaps, it was named after the motte and bailey about three miles away in Bailey's Wood (Image). For a close-up of the sign see Image

Sign for the Castle Inn
This is the sign for Image, located on the way out of Congleton towards Biddulph. Castle is a common name for pubs and it would normally indicate a nearby fortification although in this case there are no records of Congleton ever having a castle of its own. The nearest would possibly be the motte and bailey in Bailey's Wood about three miles away (Image) near Biddulph. The rather stylised castle design is actually very reminiscent of Glastonbury Tor in Somerset!

This way
There is a marked lack of council signage on this section of public footpath and I imagine that the people in the house out of shot, to the right of the camera, have got fed up with people wandering through their garden.
