Sergeant Major George Eardley VC MM
On 16 October 1944 George Harold Eardley from Congleton was awarded the Victoria Cross. His Citation reads: "On 16th October 1944 east of Overloon in Holland, Sergeant Eardley's platoon was ordered to clear some orchards where a strong opposition was holding up the advance, but 80 yards away from the objective the platoon was halted by automatic fire from machine-gun posts. Sergeant Eardley spotted one of these posts and moving forward under heavy fire killed the officer at the post with a grenade. He went on to destroy two more posts single-handed and under fire so intense that it daunted those who were with him, but his action enabled the platoon to achieve its objective and thus ensured the success of the whole attack." On the 18th of April 2004 this statue to Sergeant Major Eardley VC, MM was unveiled in the community garden (Image) not far from the town War Memorial (Image).

Ye Olde Kings Arms
This part old, part modern, building is Ye Olde Kings Arms. The only clue to its name, and use, is the sign hanging outside (Image).

Sign for Ye Olde Kings Arms
This is the sign for Image After a lot of searching to try and find which King this coat of arms belongs to, I can only conclude that there has been a lot of artistic licence has been used in the creation of this sign. All the Royal coats of arms carry three lions passant on a red field (or background), however the English Football Association has the three lions passant on a white field and is the only symbol allowed to do so having been granted permission by the Guild of Heralds in the 1940's. My grateful thanks to Trish Steel ( http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/9274 ) for her invaluable help in trying to narrow this down.

In the distance Canal Street meets Congleton High Street, nearer to hand is the junction of Chapel Street and Canal Street. The imposing building on the other side of the High Street is the Town Hall, there is a bench mark on the left-hand side of the arched doorway (Image).
