The White Lion, High Street, Congleton
Dating from the 16th or 17th century, this grade II listed pub (list entry 1130502) vies with the Lion and Swan Image for the title of the town's oldest inn. It has another claim to fame, see the blue plaque Image

Ye Olde White Lion
Located on the High Street, this beautiful Tudor building is thought to have been built in either the 16th or 17th century. John Bradshaw, the man who sentenced Charles I to death whilst Lord-President of the High Court of Justice and who was later posthumously found guilty of Regicide (see Image), is said to have served his articles here whilst it was an attorney's office. Sign for Ye Olde White Lion
This sign is attached toImage The Lion is frequently used in the names of public houses and, in heraldic terms, stands for strength and determination. The white lion, in particular, features on the coats of arms of Edward IV and the Earls of March. It also has strong links with Christianity, depicting the dignity of Christ. The Church and pubs have a long-standing connection that goes back to Monastic houses that often had a hostelry attached to it.
Note, also, the wooden pegs holding the framework of the building together.

Looking towards the High Street
In the distance Canal Street meets Congleton High Street, nearer to hand is the junction of Chapel Street and Canal Street. The imposing building on the other side of the High Street is the Town Hall, there is a bench mark on the left-hand side of the arched doorway (Image).

Pound Plus, High Street, Congleton
Beyond the pound store is a small gabled property which is a 17th century house (now a shop) surviving among the later developments and grade II listed (list entry 1326650). On the corner is the Nat West bank, which formerly occupied what is now the Counting House pub on Swan Bank Image
