Just to the northwest of Middlewich, the Trent and Mersey Canal skirts the first of a series of flashes that are a haven for bird life.

Croxton Flash
Boaters should not attempt to enter the flash, staying in the channel of the Trent & Mersey Canal. The red sign warns of shallow water. There are a number of these flashes along this stretch of the canal caused by subsidence.
