Middlewich Big Lock No 75, Cheshire
All the other Middlewich locks to the south east are narrow locks, a little over seven feet in width, some of them paired, but Big Lock will accommodate two narrowboats side by side, being about fifteen feet (3·8 metres) across. The lock allows a rise (or fall) of 5ft 1in (1·55 metres). The lock is just over seventy feet in long (22 metres); the boat is forty-two feet in length (12·8 metres).

Trent and Mersey Canal: Sharing a Big Lock
As can be seen in this picture, there is plenty of room here for two narrowboats side by side. Such and arrangement saves water. In the days of working boats, a pair of boats (motor and butty) were often tied together side by side when working through a sequence of wide locks, e.g. those at Hatton on the Grand Union Canal. Such boats were said to be 'breasted up'.
