Trent and Mersey Canal: Sharing a Big Lock
As can be seen in this picture, there is plenty of room here for two narrowboats side by side. Such and arrangement saves water. In the days of working boats, a pair of boats (motor and butty) were often tied together side by side when working through a sequence of wide locks, e.g. those at Hatton on the Grand Union Canal. Such boats were said to be 'breasted up'.

Trent and Mersey Canal: The 'Big Lock' pub
This pub was very busy in canal trading times. Now, much quieter, as many pleasure boats that pass through Middlewich use the Middlewich Branch and the upper part of the Trent and Mersey, so do not pass the Big Lock.

Middlewich Big Lock No 75, Cheshire
All the other Middlewich locks to the south east are narrow locks, a little over seven feet in width, some of them paired, but Big Lock will accommodate two narrowboats side by side, being about fifteen feet (3·8 metres) across. The lock allows a rise (or fall) of 5ft 1in (1·55 metres). On the right is the Big Lock public house and restaurant.
