Canal closed near Stanthorne Lock
The canal and towpath are temporarily closed after a major canal breach in March 2018. The pictures on the posters give some idea of the scale of the damage and it was extremely fortunate that there were no injuries or fatalities. It appears that somebody, for some unexplained reason, had opened all the paddles at Stanthorne Lock late in the evening; the weir at the next lock down was then overwhelmed by the strong flow of water resulting in the intermediate pound rapidly filling up and the water flowing over the bank. Eventually the pressure of water caused the side of the canal to collapse sending water and debris to the River Wheelock below. The Canal and River Trust has set up an emergency appeal to help fund the repair work.
