Monkey Puzzle tree in front of St Peter's
A fine Monkey Puzzle (Araucaria araucana) partly obscures the Grade I listed St Peter's church in the village of Witherley. This village is just inside Leicestershire while the nearby town of Atherstone is in Warwickshire, the River Anker which runs beside the church being the county boundary at this point. The Blue Lion, Witherley
The Red Lion is the commonest pub name in Britain and there are plenty of White Lions too - but Blue Lions are much rarer beasts ! This unusually coloured feline lurks in the quiet village of Witherley just inside Leicestershire on the Warwickshire border. I last visited this hostelry about 30 years ago - and it has certainly changed quite a bit in those intervening years. It is now a very smart, modern pub inside. It used to be a real old-fashioned village pub and served an excellent pint. The beer is still good I have to say, though personally I preferred its former self; but they are probably aiming for a younger clientele than me ! The fine thin spire of Image] can be seen like a needle behind the pub. Note: the spire looks even thinner than it actually is, because one of its facets facing the camera is coated in snow rendering it almost invisible against the pale grey sky.
