Atherstone Top Lock, Coventry Canal, Warwickshire
This is the first lock of eleven lowering the water level by eighty feet (24.4 metres) over about two miles (three kilometres). As the canal company had run out of money by 1771 when it reached Atherstone on its course from Coventry, these locks and the rest of the route were constructed later, eventually arriving at Fazeley in 1790.

On the Coventry canal at Atherstone. It was pretty dull in Atherstone but a few minutes later at Alder Mill there was brilliant low sun.

Under bridge 41, Coventry Canal
The area around the top lock at Atherstone is well kept and attractive although the presence of this derelict cruiser moored by bridge 41 does not enhance it.

Minion's Wharf, Atherstone
On the Coventry Canal and seen from bridge No. 41 over the canal. In the background is the top lock (No. 1) of the Atherstone flight. It was a dull November afternoon with intermittent heavy showers. The sun came out a little later while I photographed the former Alder Mill near Atherstone.
