A misty day looking down Long Street, with the timbered framed Old Swan pub on the left, and further along the pale pink coloured building is the Conservative Club. Image

Long Street looking east from junction with Woolpack Way
The mini-roundabout marks the junction of Long Street and Woolpack Way. This part of Long Street is quieter than the western section, as there are not many shops here. There are however several pubs, plus the Conservative Club on the corner. Image In the far distance, on the right, is one of Atherstone's best known pubs, the black & white timber framed Old Swan. The Old Swan pub sign, 175 Long Street
This is the sign of The Old Swan, one of Atherstone's oldest pubs. Atherstone is quite keen on pubs named Swan. There is still a pub called, logically, The New Swan, and long ago there was a Swan Inn too. Image;Image

The Old Swan, 75 Long Street
Another view of The Old Swan, one of Atherstone's oldest pubs. The timber framed building dates from the early to mid-16th century. My Goodall ancestors of the 16th century lived in Atherstone & Mancetter, so I would like to think that perhaps some of them once used this pub. There is not much of present day Atherstone they would recognise, and certainly not the ugly looking modern block, with the barber shop, just down the road! Image;Image

The Old Swan, 175 Long Street
Atherstone is recorded as having 32 alehouses in 1720. Almost 290 years later it still has at least half that number, and The Old Swan is amongst the oldest. It dates from the early to the mid-16th century, and is generally regarded as being the best example of a timber framed building in Atherstone. It is on the corner of Long Street, Atherstone's main road, and Welcome Street. Image;Image
