Terracotta gryphon, Longford Road, Coventry
This Delft ware gryphon is set into the wall of the Longford Primary Care Centre, a doctors' surgery built in a very plain modern style on a main road on the northern outskirts of Coventry. It is clearly a survivor of the Griffin or Old Griffin public house which once stood on or near this site; a photo on the Coventry's Pub History site shows the gryphon in situ on the front of the pub https://pubhistory.historiccoventry.co.uk/main/pub.php?pg=griffin_longford . A gryphon is a mythical beast that is part-eagle, part-lion.

By the rivers of Coventry
There are plenty of places to hang your harp here: see Psalm 137, which inspired the botanical name of these willows, Salix babylonica. We are on the weeping willow walk in Longford Park in Coventry, looking upstream along the River Sowe, at the western end of the park, where the river follows a more winding course, closer to its natural, pre-improvement state. It is late March, and the trees have newly come into leaf. "Their greenness is a kind of grief," according to Coventry poet Philip Larkin; "Last year is dead, they seem to say/Begin afresh, begin afresh." See his poem The Trees at the Poetry Archive https://poetryarchive.org/poem/trees/ . See also Image] and Image
