The gate has been left open because a narrowboat is approaching from the right. Usually all gates are closed after use to reduce leakage of water, which can sometimes be in short supply. Another boat is waiting below the lock until the bottom gate opens and the first boat leaves the chamber.

Lock No 51. Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. Some of the tail gates on this canal need rebalancing, so can be difficult to operate. The tillerman is about to climb the ladder out of the chamber to give a hand. This one wasn't too bad - Lock No 53 was the worst this season. Image]

Bishopton Lock at Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire
This is Lock No 51, which provides a rise of 7ft 9in (2·4 metres). Note the single gate at the tail of the lock. Most locks have a pair of mitre gates. The gate paddle can be seen to be up, and the turbulence in the water shows the force with which the water flows out of the lock when it is being emptied.
