Bishopton Lock near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire
The gate has been left open because a narrowboat is approaching from the right. Usually all gates are closed after use to reduce leakage of water, which can sometimes be in short supply. Another boat is waiting below the lock until the bottom gate opens and the first boat leaves the chamber.

This is Lock No 51, which provides a rise of 7ft 9in (2·4 metres).
The ground paddles are up to allow water to enter the lock, which is nearly full.
