Lock No 53 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire
This is Maidenhead Road Lock, No 53 on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. The far gate of the lock was in dreadful condition, so out of balance that it was VERY heavy work trying to re-close it after using the lock. Let's hope the 2012/2013 winter maintenance schedule includes it.
There is a flight of four locks down through Stratford-upon-Avon, then a fifth into the River Avon. This is the second from the top, raising the water level by 6ft 10in (just over two metres).

Stratford-upon-Avon Canal in Stratford, Warwickshire
The narrowboat is waiting to go under Maidenhead Road Bridge (No 67) and into Lock No 53 - which has a very difficult bottom gate needing maintenance!

Maidenhead Road Lock in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire
This is Lock no 53 on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. Both ground paddles are up and water has almost filled the lock chamber. The moored boat will pass through on its way to the basin in Stratford centre. The housing is in Kendall Avenue.

Stratford-upon-Avon Canal, Lock 53 bottom gate
The tight clearance between the lock and the bridge means that a normal balance beam cannot be used, and this framework has been constructed to allow the gate to be pulled open. Originally the extension would probably have been made of timber.

Lock Gate at Lock No 53, Stratford-upon-Avon
Maidenhead Road Lock on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal.
The tail end of most narrow locks is usually controlled by a pair of mitre gates with gate paddles to raise in order to let water out. Locks on this canal have a single gate as shown in this image. The bridge here is probably not the original one, but the result of a widened road, but has been built so close to the lock gate that there is no room for a standard beam on which to push/pull. The substituted feeble metal structure at right angles to the gate makes it much more difficult to operate. Today, I found it impossible to close the gate after using the lock, and had to summon some passing muscle.
