The Shakespeare Centre
The Shakespeare Centre on Henley Street is the entrance through which visitors to the timber-framed cottage where Shakespeare was born enter. The building's foundation stone was laid in June 1961 by Princess Alexandra of Kent. Building work was completed in 1963. It was officially opened the following year on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. The plans were that those attending the opening ceremony would include both Her Majesty the Queen and US First Lady, Jaqueline Kennedy. However, the assassination of President Kennedy in late 1963 meant that the former First Lady was no longer attending public engagements. Around the same time, the royal household announced that the Queen would be giving birth to her fourth child in March 1964, and would be unavailable for the ceremony. The building's architects were T. Spender Wood and Laurence Williams. The building includes windows etched with life-sized figures by John Hutton.
