It was a Saxon burh in the 9th century and Warwick Castle was built during the Norman Conquest. Much of the town was destroyed in The Great Fire of Warwick in 1694. Warwick Racecourse is located just west of the town centre. The Grand Union Canal passes through the town and the restored Saltisford Canal Arm is close to the town centre.

Now housing a bank, this building was The Red Lion public house. The building is early 17th century, timber framed with a 19th century stucco facade. The Red Lion, earlier named The White Hart and before that The Dolphin closed in the 1980s. The building was converted in the late 20th century. Electric scooters are the latest hazard to be avoided on our pavements, along with A-boards and people engrossed in content on their phones. Here outside Greggs at 20 Swan Street scrolling is more urgent than rolling. There have been reports in the media of explosions or fires occurring while scooters' lithium batteries were being recharged. Greggs is a popular chain of bakers. Photo number 7596951.
