Somers Place
A short street between Church Hill and Portland Place West (behind the camera). It takes its name from Earl Somers, a 19th-century grandee who had a large villa (called Victoria Cottage, long since demolished) in Portland Place West. The white building, centre, is the Woodland Tavern on the corner of New Brook Street and Church Hill Image

The Woodland Tavern (1), 3 Regent Street, Royal Leamington Spa
Located on the corner of Regent Street and New Brook Street. This traditional two bar public house occupies a mid-19th century building, which is Grade II listed. There have been later additions and alterations. Since previously photographed by others for this site, the doors to the two bars have been painted bright red. Image Image Image

The Woodland Tavern (2) - Ansells lamp, 3 Regent Street, Royal Leamington Spa
This lamp, over the lounge door, is a reminder that the public house was once part of the portfolio of Ansells, a regional brewer based in Birmingham. It disappeared decades ago but its mild & bitter are still produced by another brewery on behalf of Carlsberg, the eventual successor to Ansells. Today the pub is owned by Punch Taverns. A similar lamp remains over the entrance door to the public bar. Other photos:- Image

The Woodland Tavern (3) - sign, 3 Regent Street, Royal Leamington Spa
The faded slogan at the bottom of the sign says:- "Real pub, real ale". It would be interesting to know what the original sign looked like. Possibly the pub had a different name at some time. Other photos see:- Image
