This office building replaced a flour mill which stood on this site until about 1970. The old millstones have been built into the small brick structures which can be seen in the foreground.

The George Eliot Hotel, Bridge Street
Formerly the Bull Hotel, this inn was known to Eliot, and the Red Lion in 'Scenes from Clerical Life' is believed to refer to it. It is seen here decked out with English flags for a sporting event.
