The plaque is on Ingoldsby House, so named because the author of The Ingoldsby Legends, the Reverend Richard Barham, lived here.

Named Ingoldsby House to commemorate the author, the Reverend Richard Barham who was a onetime resident. He was most famous for writing "The Ingoldsby Legends" in 1837. He also wrote "Misadventures at Margate", a social history of the town including the former Cobb's Brewery and the Margate landladies.
