Central Parade, Herne Bay
Bank holiday Monday and hardly anyone is about; the surface water lying here on Herne Bay's seafront is an indication of the rain experienced across Kent over the previous 12 hours - a biting cold wind was doing nothing to attract the crowds either. This weather was in dramatic contrast to that north of the Midlands, where there was unbroken sunshine and high temperatures.

Amy Johnson, Herne Bay
A bronze statue to honour English aviator Amy Johnson unveiled in September 2016, close to where she was last seen alive. Ms Johnson was the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930. She died when her plane crashed into the Thames Estuary near Herne Bay in January 1941. Searches failed to find her body or the aircraft after she ditched off the Kent coast. In the background is Herne Bay Pier.
