Watergate House, King Street, Fordwich
Grade II* Listed it was originally the Manor House and later the Rectory. The core of the building is 16th century with 17th century additions and 18th century exterior with 19th century alterations. The manor had been purchased in 1560 by John Johnson, a wealthy merchant from Canterbury, who rebuilt Watergate House in its present configuration and it was held by the families of Johnson, Paramore, Finch, Crispe, Darrell, Short and Blaxland up to 1852 when it became the Rectory. Michael Powell filmed 'A Canterbury Tale' in 1944 in Fordwich and the house featured in it. The house was named Watergate House in 1947 when it returned to private ownership. It was restored and modernised in 1999. The present day garden surrounded by a Grade II Listed 11th century wall was the site of a large building called the Court Hall, probably the manor hall belonging to St Augustine's Abbey, which had owned the port and manor of Fordwich until its dissolution in 1538. Parts of St Augustine's Wharf, Canterbury's main port, is visible in the embanked river-wall where Caen stone for the city's cathedral was brought and unloaded to rebuild Canterbury Cathedral between the 11th and 15th centuries. The blue plaque reads 'JOHN BLAXLAND 1769-1845 GREGORY BLAXLAND 1771-1852 Pioneers and explorers of Australia lived here 1769-1806'.
