View from the end of the platform at Martin Mill station
The South Eastern Railway's (SER) first main line reached Dover via Ashford and Folkestone in 1844. The SER line from Ashford via Canterbury West to Ramsgate was then extended south to Deal in 1846. Dover and Deal were finally linked up directly by the "Dover & Deal Joint Railway" which was a joint venture between the SER and their bitter rival the London, Chatham & Dover Railway whose line from Canterbury East to Dover had opened on 1st August 1862. Martin Mill station was opened at the same time as the line in June 1881. Although the station name board says ‘Martin Mill for St Margaret’s Bay’, anyone attempting the walk will find it is two miles along busy lanes. This view looks towards Walmer and Deal from the Dover bound platform.
