Duplex capstan, Tilmanstone Colliery
Tilmanstone was the last fling of the Kent coalfield and this was my only visit near the end of its life. There were five steam winches/capstans on the surface. This was one of two horizontal duplex worm drive capstans by Dunlop, Bell and Co Ltd of Liverpool. The other had been converted to electric drive. It is seen in front of one of the electric winder houses with a rectangular slot for the winding rope that is just discernible. The cylinders were c8" x 12" and fitted with Stephenson link reversing motion. The weather was dreadful and most of my pictures show evidence of water on the lens.

John H Wilson winch - Tilmanstone Colliery
The water drops on the lens are testimony to a poor day and the only visit I made before closure. This horizontal duplex steam winch by John H Wilson was built c1908 and removed 1986/7. It is now restored and operational on the ash railway at Cambridge Museum of Technology - Image

Tilmanstone Colliery - steam winch
Tilmanstone was on the small Kent coalfield and closed in 1987. There were five steam winches on the surface, one converted to electric drive. This one was on the flat roof of a building associated with No. 1 pit and was built c1909 by R H Longbotham & Co Ltd of Ings Foundry, Wakefield. The cylinders were c10" x 12" and there was double reduction gear drive to the drum. The four bar crosshead guides were an 'old' feature for that date. It was a vile day and there's water on the lens. I apologise for that but better that than no record at all. Also, I foolishly failed to take any overall views of the pit head.
