The Regent, Deal
Instantly recognisable as a cinema, the Regent in fact originally opened as a theatre in 1928. That proved unsuccessful and in 1933 local architect P V Levett converted it into a cinema adding the art deco frontage. In 1963 it was converted into a bingo hall, a role which lasted until 2009 when it was closed allegedly because the smoking ban made the business unviable. Since then it has remained empty despite a planning application in 2013 for the refurbishment of the building into a three screen cinema with a restaurant and snack bar. There is a local campaign to force the owners to restore it, or sell it to someone willing to do so, but for the time being it sits gently deteriorating in its seafront location.
