Worth Village Sign
As seen in Image Because both the illustration and the lettering are reminiscent of a particular kind of seaside postcard or, a slightly dated advertisement poster, this sign stands out. It shows a veteran local yokel leaning on his walking stick in front of a typical five-bar field gate and pointing down the road towards the village, as though some wayfarer had stopped to ask him the way. The legend under the picture promises, 'There's Good Worth in Word', which is about as enigmatic as it could be until you learn that the name of the village derives from the Old English 'word', meaning an enclosure.
