Coast Guard House, Sandwich Bay Estate
The Coast Guard station at Sandwich Bay Estate ( formerly known as Shingle End) was positioned behind the star shaped bastions, built originally to defend against a possible French invasion, also known colloquially as 'Palmerston's Folly'.

Coastguard Houses, 'Shingle End'
When these houses were first built (1820's ?) to house the families of the coastguard, the location was known as Shingle End, as it was the point where South coast shingle changed to East coast sand. Its modern name is Sandwich Bay Estate.
