St Mary Magdalen's Tower, Burgate, Canterbury
Grade II Listed church tower. The original St. Mary Magdalen's church was Norman but this tower was built in 1503. In 1861 the church was united with St. George the Martyr and subsequently held its last service in 1866. The legal notice to close the church was posted in August 1870 and it was demolished in 1871 with the exception of the tower. The monument of the Whitfield family dated by a plaque from about 1680 was then placed in the base of the tower, however John Whitfield, liberal benefactor to the poor of the city died in 1691. St Thomas of Canterbury Church was built on the site in 1874/5
