Catering van, RAF Manston 1953
The van seems to be a Commer from 1952 and could well have been fitted locally. The two men are United States airmen as Manston was a joint RAF/USAF base in the early fifties. Indeed, the aircraft in the background appear to be B-47 Stratojets. UKES seems to stand for 'United Kingdom Exchange Service' which was involved in postage and catering for the forces. RAF Manston - 1953
A group of National Service RAF firemen stand in front of their engine. My father, pictured third from the left has a rather large mop of hair. He told me that after initial training, officers were not too interested in hair length as long as you did your job.
