Ferry Terminal, RAMSGATE, CT11 9FT

Towards a crane, which is the UK’s largest mobile crane and is currently being hosted at the Port of Ramsgate. It arrived on 17 low loader HGVs before it was assembled and is to be used to help refurbish the 26 year old floating berth at the Port – which can be used to dock large ferries. The crane is to be used to lift several large pieces of the berth onto dry land, including a 110 tonne bridge. The project will last for approximately eight weeks and is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to invest in port infrastructure to maximise future opportunities. Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Hunter Stummer-Schmertzing, said: “This is another great example of the council taking action to improve the port’s facilities and supports our message that we’re open for business! We’re working hard to ensure that infrastructure at the port is modernised and commercially competitive to put us in the best possible position to attract new business. Refurbishing the berth will allow us to dock far larger ferries than we’re currently capable of hosting at the port. Looking down, past the concrete former lift shaft, to the modern ferryport. The terminal caters mainly for freight traffic today on the Ostend - Ramsgate route with Trans Europa Ferries.

This is the view looking straight down from the clifftop just past Pegwell Bay. Loads of access roads and the road leading from the end of the A299 (the part that passes through the tunnel from the roundabout) can be seen, as well as a rather dilapidated looking lamp post, which has no doubt had a run in with one of many lorries which use the terminal.

A new ferry terminal, west of Royal Harbour, has been recently built and caters mainly for Trans Europa Freight traffic to and from Ostend.

The Port of Ramsgate appears to be on hard times now. Empty roads, no trucks, beach sand blowing around and travellers living in the marshalling yard. The same place as Image from busier days a few years ago.
