Caterham: 281 Coulsdon Road
This house is the highest-numbered house in Coulsdon Road, Caterham which is in effect a continuation of Coulsdon Road, Old Coulsdon. From here the odd numbers decrease as one moves towards the centre of Caterham-on-the-Hill.

View from The Grove, Caterham
The Greater London (and Borough of Croydon) boundary is on the left side of this metalled road, so most of what we see here is in Surrey, (Borough of Tandridge).

Coulsdon Road
Coulsdon Road as it leaves Coulsdon Common and enters Caterham. As the lower sign indicates this is also now the London/Surrey boundary. On the left is a coal tax post, no 167 on the list linked to below - see Image for a closer view.

Caterham: Boundary post
As this post sits exactly on the boundary between Greater London and Surrey, I assume that it is not merely a 'coal post', but a boundary post. It is also right on the London LOOP.

The Surrey boundary - or is it?
Taken looking south-east along Coulsdon Road. In terms of modern administrative units, the photographer is standing in the London Borough of Croydon, part of Greater London. If he were to walk forward some fifty yards he would be in the County of Surrey. But everyone knows that the historic County of Surrey extends right up to the River Thames. Ironically, people living in Coulsdon - officially part of Greater London - are asked to include 'Surrey' in their postal address.

Coal tax post, Coulsdon Road
On the present-day boundary between Surrey and Greater London (Croydon Borough). The coal tax posts largely follow the Greater London boundary. This is a corner of Coulsdon Common, a Corporation of London (the City) property, and their sign may be seen.
