Hilltop Lane, Chaldon, Surrey
I had just passed two workmen, from a water company, one of whom was measuring using a wheeled "yardstick". It was only a few minutes later that I realised what they were doing; locating all the water hydrants, and chipping away at the ice to check that each hydrant was working properly. In this photograph, the tiny dots, near the centre, were a family out walking the dog, and carrying water carriers; clearly they had no water at home, and were trekking to a "known" supply, locally.

Hilltop Lane
The lane climbs the North Downs scarp. Here it is just about at the top where it is crossed by the North Downs Way. The village of Chaldon is not far ahead, as the sign announces.

North Downs Way?
Located at the junction of Pilgrims' Lane and Hilltop Lane. All the previous signposts were marked "North Downs Way", so I have no reason to suspect that this one was any different.
