Brightlingsea: The War Memorial
Brightlingsea's War Memorial is in Victoria Place.
The cenotaph and its associated cruciform paths form a Grade II Listed Structure. It was designed by Richard Reginald Goulden (1876-1932), who had himself served with the Royal Engineers in the First World War. In 1916 he was wounded, and returned to England, where he served in Brightlingsea and London for the remainder of the war. Goulden specialised in public sculpture, particularly memorials, several of which are listed.
The white flag with the red diagonal cross is Saint Patrick's Saltire, being flown in recognition of it being the 17th March, St Patrick's Day, the day the photograph was taken.
