St. Barnabas church, Great Tey, Essex
The wonderful 18ft square Norman tower is one of the finest examples in the country. Close inspection will show just how much Roman bricks were re-used from Colchester and in a most decorative way. This building was originally built as a cruciform church but, unfortunately, the nave and aisles were pulled down in 1829.

The Essex Way 104 - Great Tey
Approaching Great Tey on a gloomy afternoon after a leg of the footpath with interesting visits to Coggeshall and here at Great Tey, but unremarkable countryside - made less inviting by the weather.

St. Barnabas; the parish church of Great Tey
This is a view from the northwest. The nave was demolished in 1829 and now the church just has a stump of a nave as it is shown in the picture, being the section to the right of the tower nearest the pathway. The church is very impressive and must have been even more so before the nave was pulled down.
