Derelict warehouse at The Hythe
Colchester's river port closed in 2001; since then the warehouses and associated buildings have fallen into disrepair. The area is due to be 'regenerated' under a local plan.

Colne Dredger - engine
The inverted vertical compound engine driving the bucket ladder of the now retired Colne Dredger. The vessel is seen at work here - Image The hull and engine were built in 1959 by the Rowhedge Ironworks Co Ltd of Colchester. The non condensing engine was works No. E712 with cylinders 7" & 14" x 9". The high pressure cylinder had a piston valve and the low pressure a slide valve. Stephenson link reversing motion was fitted to allow the ladder to be reversed to clear an obstruction. The ladder drive was by belts so there was the possibility of slipping if an obstruction was hit. I believe the engine has been reused.

The River Colne no longer sees trading vessels, as the port closed in 2001. Several houseboats are moored at the quay, where once coastal vessels would discharge their cargoes.
