St Osyth: Martello Tower A at Point Clear
The east coast Martello Towers were built between 1808 and 1812. 29 were built from St Osyth in Essex north-eastwards to Aldeburgh in Suffolk, and are named by Historic England in the same order from A to Z then AA to CC, so this is the first tower in the sequence. The east coast towers are not circular nor oval in plan, but more of a triangular ovoid for want of a better term. This one is a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II Listed Building. It is currently in use as the East Essex Aviation Society's Museum. The red and white stripes are on the front of World War I tank in front of the tower. Martello Tower and T34
This Martello Tower at Point Clear is Home to The East Essex Aviation Society and Museum http://www.stosyth.gov.uk/default.asp?calltype=museum. Visiting today was a T34 tank built in 1945 that actually took part in the assault on Berlin. It is fully operational (apart from the gun of course).
