40-44 The Parade, Walton-on-the-Naze
One of the first developers of Walton as a seaside resort from 1830 onwards was John Penrice. According to Pevsner's guide this "straggling and unkempt fragment" is all that survives of his work, the pier he commissioned having collapsed in 1880.

Barker's Marine Hotel, Walton-on-the-Naze
This is a sad sight. The hotel was built in 1829, well before the railway reached Walton, and kick-started the town's development as a resort. In the early days most visitors would have arrived at the nearby pier by steamer. The hotel underwent various changes of name until becoming the Marine Hotel in 1882; the Barker family owned it for many years and added their name on the front. Unfortunately, by the time of this 1985 view it had become unoccupied and derelict; despite its grade II listing it was demolished a few years later. Today the site is occupied by an apartment block, named the Dorlings after one of the earlier names for the hotel.
