Clare buildings [31]
Now occupied by a butchers shop and an antique dealer, number 5 Market Hill is an early or mid 19th century timber framed and plastered house. The shop front is late 19th century. Listed, grade II with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1376683 The market town of Clare is Suffolk’s smallest town. It lies on the north bank of the River Stour some 12 miles south of Bury St Edmunds and some 7 miles west of Sudbury. Remains of every period since the Palaeolithic have been found in the area. There is a Norman castle, a 13th century Augustinian Priory and a fine, medieval ‘wool’ church as well as many listed buildings, some of which date to the 16th century or earlier.

The building incorporates a 15th century timber framed building and is built above a medieval stone vaulted undercroft. There is a 19th century corner shop front. The Old Bank House, number 18 Market Hill is an early or mid 19th century building in gault brick. The building was occupied by Lloyds Bank for many years before they moved into the adjoining annex. The bank closed the branch in 2018. The annex is currently undergoing building work.
