Windswept field of barley, Tilty
Minutes before this photo was taken, the landscape was still and sunlit as befitted an afternoon in late Spring. But suddenly a gentle breeze became a howling wind as rain scythed across the fields. Ten minutes or so later all was back to normal as can be seen in Image

St. Mary the Virgin church, Tilty, Essex
When Tilty Abbey was a thriving monastery, this church was the cappella ante portas of the monastery. That means, the chapel by the gate. After the dissolution of Tilty Abbey, this chapel became the parish church for Tilty. An unusual feature is the fact that the chancel is much taller and wider than the nave; a quite rare example.

Clerks Cottage, Tilty from the churchyard
The church of St Mary the Virgin was once connected with the nearby Cistercian abbey. The nave of the church is Early English. The south porch is probably 17th century. The belfry and cupola are probably from the 18th century. The chancel was added early in the 14th century which Pevsner describes as "taller, wider and much more ambitious, the gift of a rich man.. It is in the sumptuous style of the moment." The approach to the church is delightful as is the churchyard. This is Clerks Cottage, immediately to the west of the churchyard.

East window, Tilty parish church, Essex
This huge chancel window with its beautifully carved tracery, must have looked stunning when it was filled with richly coloured stained glass, instead of the modern clear glass.
