Pleasant Terrace, The Causeway, Great Dunmow
Some intricate brickwork here, particularly on the end wall, which must have kept the bricklayer on his toes. The name and the date 1893 are on a stone probably planned to be in the centre of the front, but the far end has signs of being added as an afterthought. Its end wall has no diamond pattern, just simple lines of white bricks. Initials 'C.W.' are on the centre stone.

Doctor's Pond seen from North Street
Legend has it that the name "Doctor's Pond" is derived from a local doctor's use of the pond for breeding and keeping leeches which were used in the medicine of the day. Lionel Lukin, who was born in Great Dunmow on 18th May 1742 and died at Hythe in Kent on 16th February 1834, was famous for inventing the first unimmergible lifeboat in 1784. Tradition has it that Lukin's first experiments with model boats were carried out on Doctor's Pond. On the hottest day of the year so far - and a Sunday too - we expected more people to be sitting by the pond.
