St Martin's Church, Chipping Ongar
St. Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier in the 4th C AD who became a monk, and later Bishop of Tours. The church was built in about 1080, from flint, rubble and red bricks (probably imported from mainland Europe and possibly for the construction of another building). The roof timbers are probably 14th C. The chancel roof beams are probably original, although the supporting scissor beams were added in the mid-17th C. The south aisle, west porch and vestry were all added in the 19th C. {Source: St. Martin’s Church leaflet.}
