Coat of arms on Terling Inn
Formerly called the Rayleigh Arms, this is indeed the coat of arms granted in 1821 to Baron Rayleigh, who was the local squire, of family name Strutt. Officially described: Arms: Azure on a Chevron Argent between three Cross Crosslets fitchy Or as many Leopards' Faces proper Crest: A Demi Lion Azure gorged with a Mural Crown holding in the dexter paw a Cross Crosslet fitchy Or and resting the sinister on a Shield Sable charged with a Chevron Argent between three Cross Crosslets fitchy also Or Supporters: Dexter: a Reindeer Or collared and attired Sable ; Sinister: a Monkey proper banded round the loins and chained the Chain reflexed over the back Or Motto: Tenax Propositi The monkey's chain has been rendered in the wrong colour, also the crest seems to be an abbreviated version.
