Hill Hall, Theydon Mount
A lively C18th facade crowded with incident. The east front was rebuilt in 1714, but the house is more important for its C16th origins. Grade II listed. Since the Second World War, during which the house was used by the RAF and suffered mine damage, the house has been a women's prison, been gutted by fire (1969), and restored by English Heritage to be converted to flats. Parts of the house are currently open to the public by prior arrangement. The date of the photo is uncertain.
