Mersey Estuary, Eastham Lock to Oil Dock
Eastham Locks are the fifth set of locks, coming from Salford, and form the western end of the Manchester Ship Canal. It is the largest lock in the UK and controls access between the canal and the tidal Mersey estuary. The Queen Elizabeth II Oil Dock was constructed next to the locks in order to provide berthing facilities for large tankers that could not be accommodated on the canal due to their size; This has its own lock. The Queen Elizabeth II Dock, Manchester Ship Canal
The Queen Elizabeth II Dock at Eastham, was opened by the Port of Manchester On January 19th 1954. The new dock was built to provide berthing facilities for the ever increasing size of the oil tankers that were too large be accommodated on the canal. The entrance to the oil dock is just before the entrance to the Eastham Locks, which is the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal, therefore solving the problem of getting large vessels up the Ship Canal.

Stenheim departing from Eastham Locks
The chemical tanker Stenheim in the River Mersey having just passed through Eastham Locks at the start of a voyage from Stanlow to Antwerp. The 11935 gross tonnes Stenheim was built in China in 2003 and is owned by Stenersen Rederiet, Bergen, Norway.
