New Brighton Station
Looking east, towards the buffer stops. Unit 508 138 waits to return to Liverpool. The extensive Merseyrail third-rail electric system has been immensely improved by the present operating company, which has had input from Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The rolling stock is comprised exclusively of the 3-car Class 507 and 508 units, which although now over 30 years old, are efficient and well-maintained.

A memorial gateway
This four-arched entrance is made of sandstone and carries an inscription which reads:
“Friend to the poor, generous promoter to all good works. Erected in 1912 A.D. In grateful remembrance of James Smith, 1841-1909, who converted this quarry into a pleasure ground.”
