Mural depicting New Brighton Tower
New Brighton Tower was a steel lattice observation tower at New Brighton in the town of Wallasey, Cheshire, England. It stood 567 feet high, and was the tallest building in Great Britain when it opened some time between 1898 and 1900. Neglected during the First World War and requiring renovation the owners could not afford, dismantling of the tower began in 1919, and the metal was sold for scrap. The building at its base, housing the Tower Ballroom, continued in use until damaged by fire in 1969. The tower was set in large grounds, which included a boating lake, a funfair, gardens, and a sports ground. The sports ground housed, at different times, a football team, an athletics track and a motorcycle speedway track. The Beatles played at the Tower Ballroom 27 times, more than at any other venue in the United Kingdom except the Cavern Club in nearby Liverpool. * Courtesy Wikipedia

Virginia Road, New Brighton ? 1966
This was and remains the main bus terminus in New Brighton, one block back from the Marine Promenade. Behind the bus is the New Palace Amusement Park, built in 1939 in Art Deco style as an indoor amusement park. The bus is a Wallasey Corporation Leyland PD2 with Metro-Cammell bodywork, built in 1951. The body style was essentially the builder's pre-war design and looked quite antiquated even in 1966. This is one of a series of views featuring buses in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=2114547&displayclass=slide

New Brighton - rear of the funfair
When I was a kid, I would come to New Brighton on the number 11 bus from Birkenhead (either a blue Birkenhead Corporation one or a yellow Wallasey one) and they would terminate here. You could walk into the funfair through the entrance at the far end (I think).
